The Battle of Waterloo marked the final defeat of French military leader and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), who conquered much of continental Europe in the early 19th century.
Through a series of wars, Napoleon expanded his empire across western and central Europe. The Battle of Waterloo, in which Napoleon’s forces were defeated by the British and Prussians, signaled the end of his reign and the end of France’s domination in Europe.
The 2015 East India Company Waterloo Guinea is a perfect tribute for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The obverse design features a regal portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf and the reverse features a ‘military’ shield design.
The 1813 Military Guinea is the most important coin of the Napoleonic wars, having been struck specifically for the Duke of Wellington’s army. It was the only full guinea struck during the war and would also be the last guinea ever to be struck.
Special permission has been granted by the government of St Helena to issue this coin. This is extremely poignant, as the island of St Helena is where Napoleon was exiled after Waterloo and where he would spend the remainder of his life, under the watchful eye of the East India Company who controlled the island.
