On Easter Monday 1916, a group of Irish nationalists proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic and, along with some 1,600 followers, staged a rebellion against the British government in Ireland.
As a result of the rising, a treaty was signed in 1921 that in 1922 established the Irish Free State which eventually became the modern-day Republic of Ireland. The Easter Rising 4oz Silver Medal was struck as a special issue for the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and pays tribute to the important history of Ireland.
The obverse features The Seven Signatories of the 1916 Proclamation in their Irish volunteers’ uniform; along with the GPO, the headquarters of the rebellion. It also features the inscription ‘FOR YOUR SACRIFICE*FOR OUR FREEDOM’.
The reverse features the Easter Rising lily, which is the symbol of the remembrance in memory of those who lost their lives in Easter Week 1916. Surrounded with a laurel design inspired by the Easter Rising 1916 medal. With an inscription in Gaelic “GO RAIBH MAITH AGAT”, which translates to ‘Thank You’.
